What waits inside
The sun goes down in the west, and the old city stirs awake.
The last of the light drains behind the mud walls, and the lamps wake one by one. Woodsmoke, voices, the shifting of animals — all of it drifting up out of the narrow lanes.
Among all those lamps, something is hidden.
The inns are full; the market has not slept. Voices rise like a tide, lamplight lies woven across the stones, and the clues are scattered somewhere between them. A whole town let them pass that night. Tonight the looking falls to you.
In the darkness, a first thread of light.
